Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy (BCST)

what is bCST?
Biodynamic craniosacral therapy (BCST) is a gentle, non-invasive approach that works with the nervous system, fluid body and the body’s inherent regulatory rhythms. Rather than using force or manipulation, BCST is based on listening. Through gentle contact, the practitioner follows subtle movements and rhythms within the body, creating a supportive environment in which the system can settle and reorganise at its own pace.
The human body exists largely within a fluid environment, with its fluids playing essential roles in protection, nourishment, communication, movement and regulation. Within BCST, attention is given to subtle rhythmic movements expressed throughout this fluid system, often described as tidal rhythms. Like the movement of the ocean’s tides, these rhythms are understood within biodynamic practice as expressions of deeper processes of organisation and regulation.
This relationship between fluid, movement and organisation begins during our earliest development, long before conscious thought emerges. BCST works with the understanding that these deeper organising processes remain present throughout life. The focus is therefore not only on areas of tension or dysfunction, but also on recognising the underlying health and capacity for regulation that continue to exist within the system.
How It Works & What It Can Do For You
BCST works with the autonomic nervous system, supporting a shift from persistent stress and protective states towards greater regulation. As the system begins to settle, patterns of holding associated with injury, stress, trauma, illness or overwhelming experiences can begin to soften and reorganise.
Rather than forcing change or directing the body towards a predetermined outcome, the work follows the priorities of the system. As long-standing patterns become less fixed, there is greater opportunity for flexibility, resilience and new pathways of response and regulation to emerge.
People often experience a greater sense of calm, grounding, clarity and connection within themselves, alongside reduced tension and discomfort, improved rest and recovery, and a greater capacity to meet the demands of everyday life without becoming overwhelmed.
BCST Supports
Stress, Burnout & Nervous System Regulation
Chronic stress, burnout, nervous system overwhelm, difficulty relaxing or switching off, hyperarousal, heightened sensitivity, anxiety, sleep difficulties, fatigue and exhaustion.
BCST offers a quiet environment in which the body can slow down and settle. This can be particularly supportive when someone feels persistently activated, depleted or unable to fully rest.
Trauma, PTSD & Protective Patterns
Trauma-related symptoms, PTSD, C-PTSD, childhood and developmental trauma, histories of abuse, accidents, falls, medical trauma, grief, shock, hypervigilance, dissociation and long-standing protective responses.
BCST is gentle and does not require traumatic experiences to be retold or relived. The work can meet patterns of tension, protection and nervous system activation as they present within the body.
Pain, Tension & Persistent Discomfort
Chronic or persistent pain, neck and back discomfort, muscular tension, recurring areas of holding, restricted movement and physical patterns that have remained following injury or periods of stress.
Because BCST works with the body as an interconnected whole, attention is not limited only to the area where symptoms are being experienced.
Headaches, Migraines, Jaw & Cranial Tension
Headaches, migraines, TMJ and jaw tension, clenching, facial tension, head and neck tension, dental-related tension and symptoms following head injury or concussion.
These patterns may involve relationships between the head, jaw, neck, surrounding tissues and the wider body rather than occurring in isolation.
Chronic & Complex Conditions
Fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, persistent pain conditions, heightened sensitivity and other ongoing or complex health presentations.
For people whose systems are easily overwhelmed, the gentle nature of BCST allows the session to be adapted to the person’s capacity rather than relying on strong physical intervention.
Injury, Surgery & Recovery
Recovery following injury, accidents, falls, surgery, physical trauma or prolonged periods of illness and depletion.
BCST can provide complementary support during recovery, particularly where the body continues to feel guarded, unsettled or affected after the original event has passed.
Pregnancy, Birth, Babies & Children
Pregnancy and postpartum support, recovery following birth, difficult or traumatic birth experiences, newborn and infant settling, and support for babies and children.
BCST is a gentle, non-invasive approach that can be adapted to different stages of life and to the individual needs of the person receiving it.
