How did we Get here?

An exploration of modern health, human evolution, stress, disconnection, adaptation, and the conditions shaping the human nervous system.

For millions of years, human beings evolved within nature. Long before cities, screens, industries, governments, and modern medicine, our ancestors lived in direct relationship with the land, the seasons, the weather, and each other.

Every system within the human body evolved within this environment. The nervous system, immune system, digestive system, respiratory system, musculoskeletal system, and even our social instincts were shaped by a world of movement, challenge, connection, and natural rhythm.

One of the earliest turning points in our story was the discovery of fire. Cooking transformed the way we consumed food, increasing the energy available to support the growth of the human brain. Agriculture followed, villages became cities, civilisations emerged, and human beings gained comfort, security, and knowledge unlike anything seen before.

Yet evolution moves slowly. The modern world arrived far faster than our biology could adapt.

The Modern Human Condition

The Industrial Revolution fundamentally altered the relationship between humans and nature. Work moved indoors, artificial light extended the day, machines reduced physical labour, food became increasingly processed and disconnected from the soil from which it came, communities became larger but often less intimate, and the pace of life accelerated.

Then came electricity, television, computers, the internet and smartphones. In only a few generations, human beings became exposed to more information than our ancestors could have encountered in an entire lifetime.

Today we live in a world of unprecedented convenience. Food can arrive at our door with a few taps of a screen. Climate is controlled with the push of a button. Entertainment is endless and information is available instantly. Yet many people feel more exhausted, anxious, disconnected, and overwhelmed than ever before.

The human nervous system evolved to respond to immediate threats: a predator, a storm, a conflict within the tribe. Stress was intense but temporary. Once the threat passed, the body returned to balance.

Today the threats are different. Financial pressure, social comparison, political division, constant notifications, loneliness, uncertainty, and information arriving from every corner of the world have become part of everyday life. For the first time in human history, many of us carry the weight of the world in our pockets.

In a single day, the average person may consume more information than many of our ancestors encountered in weeks, months, or perhaps even years. News arrives instantly. Thousands of advertisements compete for attention. Social media exposes us to a continuous stream of opinions, comparisons, fears, conflicts, and stimulation.

The human brain evolved within small communities where information travelled slowly and directly influenced survival. Today, the nervous system is asked to process a volume of stimulation unprecedented in human history. While our technology has evolved rapidly, the biology processing that information remains largely the same.

As life becomes faster, more digital, and increasingly external, attention is pulled away from the body and into screens, information, and constant stimulation. Less time is spent in direct physical experience, with less movement, less contact with nature, and less awareness of breath, posture, and internal sensation. The body is used, but not always felt.

Many people know what is happening on the other side of the world before they know what is happening within themselves. They know the latest news, the latest controversy, and the latest notification, yet may not recognise that they are exhausted, overwhelmed, holding their breath, or carrying tension until the body demands their attention.

Over time, this creates a growing disconnection from the body’s signals and rhythms. The more externally focused the system becomes, the further it moves away from its own capacity to regulate.

The Environment We Now Live Within

Many of the foundations that supported human health have begun to erode. Food is abundant yet often less nutrient dense. Soils are depleted. Movement has become optional. Sleep is disrupted by artificial light and constant stimulation. Children spend increasing amounts of time in front of screens rather than exploring the physical world.

The modern food environment would be unrecognisable to our ancestors. Ultra-processed foods, chemical additives, pesticides, herbicides, and plastic packaging have become woven into everyday life. Microplastics are now being detected throughout the human body, including the blood, lungs, brain tissue, and reproductive organs.

Environmental pollutants, heavy metals, endocrine-disrupting chemicals, and the increasing presence of technology have created conditions that our biology has had little time to adapt to.

At the same time, childhood itself has changed. Many children now spend more time interacting with screens than with the natural world. Physical play has declined, face-to-face social interaction has decreased, and exposure to information, stimulation, advertising, and digital media begins at increasingly younger ages.

Researchers continue to explore how these changes may influence attention, learning, emotional regulation, sleep, behaviour, and neurodevelopment. What is clear is that the developing nervous system now grows within an environment profoundly different from that of previous generations.

The Forgotten Foundation: Breath

Perhaps nowhere is the mismatch between ancient biology and modern life more visible than in the way we breathe.

Breathing is the first thing we do when we enter the world and the last thing we do before we leave it. Every cell in the body depends upon it, yet most people rarely think about how they breathe.

For most of human evolution, breathing occurred naturally through the nose, supported by wider jaws, larger airways, regular movement, and lifestyles that encouraged full diaphragmatic breathing. Today, many people breathe through the mouth, breathe rapidly, breathe high into the chest, or spend much of their lives unconsciously restricting their breath.

In clinical practice, one of the most common patterns I encounter is a restricted diaphragm. The diaphragm is far more than a breathing muscle. It influences posture, movement, circulation, lymphatic flow, digestion, emotional regulation, and nervous system function. It forms an important bridge between the upper and lower body and plays a central role in how we respond to stress.

When breathing becomes restricted, the effects ripple throughout the entire system. The jaw tightens, the neck and shoulders compensate, the lower back absorbs additional load, sleep becomes less restorative, recovery becomes more difficult, and the nervous system remains subtly prepared for danger. Over time, what begins as a breathing pattern can become a whole-body pattern.

After years of working with people, I am continually struck by how often the same pattern appears. Different stories, professions, ages, and cultures, yet remarkably similar bodies: restricted breathing, tight diaphragms, jaw tension, neck and shoulder pain, poor sleep, fatigue, digestive dysfunction, nervous system overwhelm, and bodies that rarely feel safe enough to fully rest.

Many people search for solutions through treatments, supplements, diets, medications, or the latest health trend while overlooking one of the most fundamental rhythms of human health.

Before movement, there is breath. Before regulation, there is breath. Before performance, there is breath.

The breath is one of the foundations upon which every other system in the body is built. When breathing changes, the entire system must adapt.

The Body Remembers

Many people seek treatment hoping for a quick fix, yet what they are experiencing has often developed over years or decades. The body has adapted to stress, pressure, trauma, responsibility, overstimulation, environmental exposures, poor sleep, nutritional deficiencies, emotional pain, and disconnection. What was once a temporary survival response can become a long-term pattern.

Importantly, many of these patterns begin much earlier than we realise. The developing child learns safety through relationships, touch, connection, and through being seen, soothed, supported, and understood. The nervous system is not born knowing how to regulate itself. It develops through interaction with others and through the environments in which it grows.

When safety, stability, and connection are present, the system develops differently than when fear, uncertainty, neglect, stress, or trauma are present. Many adult patterns of anxiety, hypervigilance, addiction, emotional reactivity, disconnection, and relationship difficulties have roots in the conditions that shaped the developing nervous system.

The body remembers, not always through conscious memory, but through physiology: through breathing patterns, muscle tension, posture, nervous system responses, and unconscious behaviours and reactions.

What we call personality is often influenced by adaptation. What we call coping is often adaptation. What we call symptoms are often adaptation. Many of the behaviours and responses that create difficulties later in life originally developed for a reason. They helped us survive.

The body is intelligent. The nervous system is intelligent. Even when those adaptations are no longer serving us, they often began as attempts to create safety.

As trauma researcher Gabor Maté writes:

“Trauma is not what happens to you. Trauma is what happens inside you as a result of what happened to you.” — Gabor Maté

This understanding shifts the question from “What is wrong with me?” to “What happened to me?” and perhaps even further: “What did my system need to do in order to survive?”

Understanding this does not remove responsibility, but it often creates compassion—for ourselves, for others, for the patterns we carry, and for the healing that may still be possible.

Symptoms, Adaptation & Chronic Illness

Modern medicine has become extraordinarily effective at helping people survive acute illness, trauma, infection, and injury. Yet many of the health challenges facing the modern world are chronic rather than acute. They develop slowly over years and decades through the interaction of lifestyle, environment, stress, relationships, nutrition, movement, sleep, genetics, and countless other factors.

In many cases, the question is no longer simply what disease a person has, but what conditions allowed that disease to emerge. The body is constantly expressing the sum of the conditions acting upon it.

Pain may appear in the lower back, yet involve breathing patterns, stress, posture, sleep, movement, emotional holding, or years of adaptation. Anxiety may appear as a mental experience, yet also involve physiology, environment, relationships, and a nervous system that has learned to remain on alert.

Perhaps one of the greatest misunderstandings in health is the belief that symptoms are simply problems to eliminate. Often they are adaptations. The body is rarely working against us. More often, it is trying to protect us.

Inflammation is protection. Anxiety is protection. Muscular tension is protection. Hypervigilance is protection.

The body is always asking: “What do I need to do to survive these conditions?”

Sometimes the answer is tension. Sometimes the answer is hypervigilance. Sometimes the answer is exhaustion. Sometimes the answer is disconnection. Even many chronic patterns that create suffering may have originally developed as attempts to keep the system safe.

This does not mean the symptoms should remain. It means they deserve to be understood.

Rather than asking only, “How do I get rid of this symptom?” we might also ask, “What is this symptom trying to protect me from?” and “What conditions would allow this system to function differently?”

Healing often begins when we stop fighting the body and start listening to it.

Interconnectedness

One of the most influential Buddhist philosophers in history, Nāgārjuna, taught that nothing exists independently. Everything arises through causes and conditions.

Modern science increasingly arrives at similar conclusions through systems theory, epigenetics, ecology, neuroscience, and the growing understanding that the body cannot be separated from the mind, nor the individual from their environment. The deeper science looks, the less isolated everything appears.

The gut influences the brain. The brain influences the immune system. The immune system influences mood. Sleep influences inflammation. Inflammation influences mental health. Stress influences digestion. Relationships influence physiology. Environment influences behaviour. Everything exists within relationship.

Families shape nervous systems. Relationships shape beliefs. Communities shape behaviour. Trauma shapes adaptation. Culture shapes identity. Environment shapes health.

Trauma creates trauma. Violence creates violence. Addiction creates addiction. Disconnection creates disconnection.

Yet the opposite is equally true. Healing creates healing. Safety creates safety. Connection creates connection. Compassion creates compassion.

Perhaps one of the greatest illusions of modern life is the belief that we exist separately from one another. The reality may be that health, suffering, resilience, healing, and human experience have always been shared far more deeply than we imagine.

Healing & Remembering

Perhaps one of the greatest challenges of modern health is not simply disease itself. It is disconnection: disconnection from our bodies, our breath, nature, community, meaning, and ourselves.

The modern world often teaches us to look outward for solutions: more information, more productivity, more achievement, more distraction. Yet healing often begins by turning attention in the opposite direction—back toward the body, back toward the breath, back toward awareness, back toward relationship, and back toward the conditions that support health.

Many people spend years fighting their symptoms, their anxiety, their pain, their fatigue, and their body. Yet the body is rarely the enemy. More often, it is communicating. More often, it is adapting. More often, it is asking to be understood.

The remarkable thing about the human body is not simply its capacity to survive. It is its capacity to change. The nervous system can learn. The brain can adapt. Patterns can shift. New pathways can emerge. Healing remains possible throughout life.

This does not mean that every condition can be cured, nor does it mean that healing follows a straight line. But the body possesses an extraordinary capacity for regulation, adaptation, resilience, and repair when the conditions are supportive.

Health is rarely created by a single intervention. It emerges through the accumulation of many small influences acting together over time: a deeper breath, better sleep, movement, connection, purpose, compassion, and moments of stillness within a world of constant noise.

The goal is not perfection. The goal is not to eliminate every symptom. The goal is to create the conditions in which the body can do what it has evolved to do: adapt, regulate, recover, and heal.

Perhaps healing does not begin with fixing what is broken. Perhaps it begins with remembering what we have forgotten.

That we are part of nature. That we are shaped by relationship. That the body carries intelligence. Breath matters. Connection matters. And health emerges not from any single part, but from the way the whole system works together.
